Carenero · Your base for surfing Bocas

Your first wave.
Your next great trip.

Some trips start with a board. Others start with the wish to learn. Make Doña Mara your home between sessions: six rooms, breakfast and island life before another day in the water.

I want to learn

Start with a lesson, the right board and an instructor who chooses suitable conditions. Black Rock on Carenero is a go-to learning spot when the sea allows. Your first goal: enjoy yourself, understand the ocean and build confidence.

Surf session in a blue-water wave

I surf. I want more.

Bocas offers walls for turns, reef breaks and world-class waves when the right swell arrives. Give yourself a few extra days and stay flexible: the sea and your ability decide the best session, not the calendar.

When should you come to surf?

December–March

The main window

Typically the most consistent swell period. A useful starting point for planning a surf-focused trip.

June–August

A second opportunity

Another Caribbean swell window. Conditions vary: check the forecast closer to your trip.

Rest of the year

Stay flexible

Sessions are possible, but swell is less reliable. September–November are usually calmer.

Seasons are a guide, not a wave guarantee. Reefs, currents, wind and swell size change the difficulty: choose your spot with local advice, respect priority and avoid stepping on coral.

Plan your sessions with The Experience Surf Camp

We host their guests and can point you in their direction. Ask the camp directly about lessons, equipment and programmes. Accommodation and surfing are booked separately unless expressly agreed otherwise.
